A Personal Analysis of Dungeons and Dragons

What the heck is Dungeons and Dragons? Well, let’s talk about that. Dungeons and Dragons is a table top fantasy role-playing game created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson in the year 1974. The game is based of a miniature wartime game called chainmail. Dungeons and Dragons is widely considered to be the thing that started the role playing game industry.

Earlier this week I sat down with a friend to play a game called dungeons and dragons. Now while this wasn’t a very large session at all it was at least rather well thought out. This was a one on one game where my friend Kaiden was the dungeon master. A dungeon master is the person who sets up the story and the events that happening inside of it. They are basically responsible for creating the world that the play takes part in. Since this was my first time ever playing dungeons and dragons his goal wasn’t to kill me and it was more so to just get me familiar with the game. Throughout this session I decided to play as a tempest cleric for two reason. I wanted to play a cleric because I knew that self-preservation was going to be important, so I needed to be some kind of character that had healing. And reason number two is that tempest cleric sounded the coolest to me. I was a human fighting my way through a dungeon with the purpose of getting the magic artifact at the end of the dungeon to save my town. I have sat in on a few games and not played in them though. And having an extremely basic knowledge of the game made it just a little bit easier then if I would have come into the game with no knowledge. I spent most of the game wondering around the dungeon aimlessly and just fighting everything I came across. The session was what is called a home brew session. Where most of the things in the session are created by the dungeon master and not premade by Wizards of The West Coast or some other company that creates adventure guides. This session lasted about an hour and I had a decent amount of fun with it.

In conclusion I believe that Dungeon and Dragons can be an incredibly fun game when played with the right people and host by the right dungeon master. But it can also be a total drag if even just the dungeon master isn’t great. I would love to have a session going on with a bunch of my best friends. But they live far away currently and that wouldn’t be possible. I enjoyed my time with the game and I would recommend to anyone who is into that kind of thing.
